How to Clean Light Fixtures, Chandeliers, and Recessed Lighting

Light fixtures diffuse and soften the light from the bulbs, which can illuminate the whole room. However, they are magnets for dirt, insects, cobwebs and dust. Dirty light fixtures can reduce a room’s light while using the same amount of energy as light bulbs and decrease their lifespan.

Cleaning light fixtures can pose dangers.

Cleaning light fixtures require a ladder, which is one of the most difficult parts. A ladder is often required to unscrew light fixtures. This can lead to accidents. While it is possible to clean light fixtures in their original locations, this will not replace the need to take them down at least twice per year for a thorough cleaning.

A second danger is a fact that light bulbs can get too hot. You can reduce the chance of your fixtures burning by turning off the light for at least one hour before you start cleaning them. The electricity is another risk. To clean and wash light fixtures, you should remove their electrical parts. It would help if you did not clean them in their original place. Instead, use a dry dusting brush. You can wipe them with a damp cloth but not dripping. You could endanger your electrical components by letting water or spray cleaner fluid get in.

Regular dusting

It would be best if you dusted light fixtures at least once a week. You can do this while the light fixtures are still in their place. To dust ceiling fixtures, chandeliers, and recessed lighting, you can use a long-handled dusting brush. If this is done every week, deep cleaning of light fixtures should be performed only once a year.

Glass Ceiling Fixtures

Remove the light fixtures from the base, ceiling, and lamp. First, remove all dust, bugs, or other dirt from the light fixture and throw it in the trash. Then dust the outside and inside with a microfiber cloth. Sometimes, this is enough. The fixtures should be cleaned at least twice per year. Glass light fixtures can be cleaned with warm water and mild dish soap. Let them soak for a while before wiping them off and rinsing. To dry them, wipe the entire surface with a towel. They are now ready for replacement. Do not place glass light fixtures into the dishwasher. They could be broken. You can spot clean your glass fixtures with glass cleaner.

Chandeliers

You may be able to dust your chandelier in place, depending on its complexity. However, a bi-annual cleaning is likely to be required where the chandelier must be taken down. To make it easier, you can take a picture of how the chandelier is assembled. In a spray bottle, you can make your cleaner. Mix 1/4 cup vinegar with 3-4 cups water. You can also add a few drops of dish soap to a spray bottle of water. Spray each section of the chandelier at a time. Use a microfiber cloth to dry the crystals and pieces of the chandelier. This will help polish them. See how the chandelier shines when you reassemble it.

Recessed Lighting

Regular dusting of recessed lighting is the best way to clean it. This should be done after the light has been off for at least one hour. To clean the interior of the recessed lighting, remove the bulb carefully and wipe it with a damp cloth. You can also turn off the power to the area you are working in. Clean the bulb and then replace it. You will see a brighter light.
