Choosing the Best Size for a Foyer Chandelier

The foyer is one of the most important areas of a home, but it’s also one of the most neglected in smaller homes, where the foyer is not visible at all. Even in grand homes, this space can be overlooked because it lacks style and substance.

The foyer deserves better because it greets guests and you when you arrive home. Your foyer should be the focal point of the home. A well-lit foyer will make a good first impression. Finding the right size foyer chandelier can be difficult to fit your entryway and hang it at the right height.

There are some guidelines that interior designers can follow in choosing a chandelier’s diameter, height and lighting level that matches the foyer. A foyer chandelier should be hung in the center of the room.

The Chandelier’s Height Above the Floor

The rule of thumb for designers is that the ceiling of a hanging light fixture should not be more than 7 feet above the ground. This standard applies to foyers that have standard 8-foot ceilings. If you use a hanging fixture, it will need to be small enough to maintain the recommended height. The chandelier fixture should be raised if foyers are higher than 8 feet. It is common to raise the chandelier to 7 feet (6 inches) above the floor in a foyer with a single-story ceiling.

If the foyer is more than two stories high, it is best to position the bottom of your chandelier at the second story level. The fixture can be placed 8 feet above the floor or higher.

The Diameter of the Chandelier Fixture

Another rule of thumb for interior designers is to size the chandelier. The length and width of the room are combined to determine the chandelier’s diameter. This measurement is then converted into inches. This gives you the correct diameter of the chandelier light fixture. A foyer measuring 10 x 10 ft in size would require a light fixture of 20 inches in diameter to produce a great visual effect.

In some cases, this rule of thumb might be modified. To compensate for extra tall ceilings or chandeliers that hang in foyers with two stories, the chandelier might be 2 to 3 inches larger.

The Height of Chandelier Fixture

The recommended chandelier height depends on the height of your room. Designers should aim for a ceiling height of 2 to 3 inches for every foot of hanging lighting fixtures. A chandelier 20-30 inches high is required for a foyer ceiling that is 10 feet tall. A foyer with a 16-foot ceiling (two-story) can comfortably accommodate a large chandelier of 32 to 48 inches in height.

Fixture Illumination

There are many levels of illumination that light fixtures can provide. This is measured by the combined wattage of all the bulbs within the fixture. The practice of lighting professionals is to adjust the illumination to the foyer area using a simple formula. Multiply the room’s length by its width and multiply that number by 1.5. This calculates the required wattage for the combined bulbs in a ceiling fixture. A foyer measuring 10 x 10 feet has 100 square feet. This means that 150 watts should be required for the lighting fixture. This total wattage can also be achieved with one or more light fixtures.

Additional Design Guidelines

Interior designers must also determine the dimensions of the fixture to be used as a chandelier fixture.

  • The style of the foyer chandelier should be in keeping with the interior design. For example, a Western-style home might be too adorned with sparkling crystals, but a modern home could have a sleek metal chandelier.
  • Designers recommend placing the chandelier in the exact vertical center of a foyer with two stories. This creates a welcoming light for guests who come to your home from outside.
  • A chandelier with two or more tiers is the best way to illuminate a large foyer of two stories. It will make it visually appealing from both the top and bottom of the stairs.
  • A ceiling-mounted light fixture is better than a hanging chandelier for small foyers with low ceilings. A hanging chandelier can overwhelm small spaces.
